With composite construction and easily detachable neck, the Journey OF660 is truly a guitar you can take anywhere. Whether in extreme cold, heat, or moisture (high- or low-humidity), carbon fiber is impervious to the elements. What this means, for you the player, is that the guitar will not warp or swell. And because it folds up into a tidy TSA-approved case, it will fit into the overhead compartment of most airplanes. The case even has a pocket large enough for your laptop or other sundry items.

Assembling the guitar is simple. The body and neck store in separate pouches within the case, but are still attached together by the strings. Once removed from the case, simply slot the neck into a channel in the body with two posts—a triangular one and a screw post that you will tighten once the neck has clicked into place. Pull back on the neck until you here the “click,” and then tighten the inner screw by hand, from the back of the guitar…

Sweetwater Review: “Triple Threat Guitar” by Roger

Normally, I don’t leave reviews (can’t even remember the last time I did), but this is a wonderful and surprising guitar and I figured I should—especially since it’s all carbon, made in China, and looks rather bizarre. That used to be three strikes for me, but no more. I’m a dinosaur, been playing for 50 years, professionally in my 20s and 30s, owned and/or experienced pretty much the whole spectrum of acoustic and electric guitars. I got over my carbon prejudice by trying a Rainsong and bonding with the tone, though I didn’t like the neck. I got over my China prejudice by realizing I’ve had iPhones since they came out and guess where they are made. And I got over the bizarre looks because the Journey is a prime example of form following function and, as an advertising/marketing guy by profession, I can appreciate that. So instead of three strikes, I bought this as—hopefully—a triple-threat Swiss Army Knife instrument and it has met that challenging mission beautifully. Needed a smaller everyday couch/parlor-ish guitar; REALLY needed a leave-out carbon guitar that I didn”t have to worry about due to the grinding lack of humidity where I live in Arizona; and finally I needed a great-sounding travel guitar. Check, check, and check—not to mention that I’ve never played a travel guitar that sounds remotely as good as this Journey. The matte finish is exceptionally cool and worry-free as well. In addition, Journey supplies a second “lower action” bone saddle which is a very thoughtful touch; I dropped mine in as soon as I got it and the playability is super. Not to mention, the built-in under-bridge (not under-saddle) pickup sounds surprisingly good. Which is great if you’re on the road and get a chance to plug in and jam.

Finally, I’ve been working with Ryan Murphy for, I think, 12 years, and he is absolutely the best. Knowledgable, helpful, responsive, understanding. In fact, the other reason I wrote this review was to express in public a long-overdue “thanks” to Ryan for so many years of top-notch, extra-mile service.

Sweetwater Review: “Astonishing travel instrument – nothing else comes close for travel.”

have owned a fair number of guitars, and even a small body fixed neck guitar that could have been used for traveling. I was looking for a travel guitar that had it all …. compact design for easy transport, made from some kind of indestructible material that would resist temperature and humidity changes, big sound, easy setup, acoustic neck and nut, plugin capable. I tried a lot of stuff, from Baby Taylors to Martin Backpackers to a Yamaha Silent Guitar skeleton thingy and to some nasty little skeleton thing that I do not remember the name of (probably due to traumatic memories). Nothing suited me. The small body “real” instruments neither sounded good nor were comfortable to play. Any “real” good quality wood guitar would be fragile and hard to transport on a plane, and I had already come really close to ruining an old really nice Guild trying to travel with it.

Then, by accident, I came across this pretty baby … carbon fiber, real acoustic specs on the neck and nut, great sound, and folding removable neck, nice backpack case for travel. Bought one, pulled it out of the packing box while it was literally freezing cold (try THAT with a good wood guitar and enjoy the crackling sound), attached the neck, and kicked it off. Astonishingly it was almost perfectly in tune, and the sound blew me away. I love the neck ergos …. reminds me of a Martin (and I own a Martin) with that slightly flattish back plane. Mini-Grover tuners. Whats not to like?

Had a pro set it up (it needed a bit of TLC) and I have not looked back.

Note to Journey Instruments: You missed a major marketing area …. this instrument is marketed for travelers. But its largest potential market is women and children, for 2 reasons: 1) The rugged nature of its construction will allow it to take some abuse, which kids have a tendency to do, and 2) The smaller body with the Manziel wedge design and the angle easing makes it easier for smaller folks like women and children to hold the instrument. The removable neck is a bonus.

Sweetwater Review: Ultimate Travel Guitar

Finally I had the chance to travel with my new Journey OF660. Can’t say enough about it: it is sturdy, a snap to assemble and disassemble, wonderful playability, perfect action, very comfortable to hold, very nice tone. It is not very loud (unplugged) but loud enough for my purposes while travelling: playing in my room, in a terrace somewhere, in a beach somewhere. As the days go by I like it more and more…….it is becoming a close friend.
I have a few high end guitars – two nice Martins, one McIlroy (wonderful Irish luthier), one Paasonen (Finnish luthier), one Victor Lozano classical. So I know a bit about tone and quality.
But hands down this is a pearl for travelling which you can take with you in a backpack.
Highly recommended.
Finally a good word for Sweetwater as supplier. The best customer service and follow up I have ever seen. Also highly recommended…!!!

Amazon Review by MadmanBlueBox: A lot of guitar for what you pay

Right out the bag, I put the neck on and was shocked that the thing was almost still in tune (we’re talking 1/4 step sharp on 4 strings) !!!
The neck is much wider than most of the travel/parlors I’ve been playing lately but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing for those that want a full feel or fingerpick. Think Taylor 514 feeling.
Volume! This thing really does sing with new strings, clear as a bell and projects extremely well.
The factory setup is really high, so like all instruments get it set to where you like it. Not going to ding Journey for leaving plenty of of room to adjust action.
Actual Ebony end pins! Saved me a couple bucks.
Pickup is really robust through my Fishman mini. I will try it DI through an LR Baggs Venue and update later.
You pay for convenience for sure. And for those not familiar with carbon fiber, do not expect perfect polished edges.
For a grand I think I got my money’s worth, so Journey if you’re listening, make a super jumbo and I’ll be all over it. So very glad I didn’t pull the trigger on a rainsong.

Amazon Review by Tande: Best Travel Guitar Ever Made

This is am excellent sounding travel guitar. I own a Taylor GS Mini but it’s really tight for my fingers in the frets. This guitar sounds better by far & has more fret room, much like my hd28 Martin. If you want a travel guitar that plays like a full size guitar & sounds very good this is the one. Journey has really made a great guitar. I travel weekly with a guitar & now I feel I have made a great purchase. No regrets from me.

Guitar Adventures: Best-Sounding Collapsible Travel Guitar Reviewed

Travel guitars come in all shapes and sizes. I’ve bought one and avoided many others, mostly because I can’t bear to sacrifice tone for the sake of a little convenience. I’ve seen collapsible guitars before and I’ve never been impressed. They seem so flimsy and the gig bags are awkward. I don’t usually think of a collapsible travel guitar as one that I would be proud to show off and certainly not one that I would be willing to play on stage.

After a couple weeks with the carbon fiber Overhead guitar, however, and I’ve changed my tune.

#1 Rated by Gutiar Junky as Best Carbon Fiber Guitar in 2018

A combination new materials and construction techniques makes this guitar a truly amazing instrument. Although not made of the traditional tone wood, carbon fiber has been praised in guitar making for its stability, tone, lightness, durability and ultra-modern looks.

This particular guitar has the body and neck connected via a patented fast-release joint that allows for easy packing into the included gig bag….

Acoustic Guitar Forum: Journey Instruments OF660 Impressions/Review by Sanjuro

I was recently given the opportunity to purchase one of Journey Instruments OF660 carbon fiber travel guitars. I have been following this guitars production for quite some time, so I was quite ecstatic when an opportunity came up that allowed me to purchase one. The guitar I purchased (at a slightly discounted price) is an early production model that was returned to Journey from a dealer as it was considered a “blemished” guitar….

Let me preface this review by explaining why I have been following this guitar so closely over it’s development. I work on a Oil Rig (3 weeks on, 3 weeks off) so travel guitars have always been a part of my guitar collection. Over the years I’ve owned a number of them including Voyage-Air, Martin Backpacker, and a handful of various ¾ sized guitars. For one reason or another I’ve never been able to find a good solution to my situation/problems that working on a rig presents. That is until now, the OF660 is going to fit the bill perfectly! Being entirely constructed of carbon fiber, I now won’t have to worry about the humidity issue of being 100 miles offshore, that wreck havoc on wooden guitars. And fitting compactly into the 22”x14”x10” custom backpack adds to the ease of travel. It’s a win-win for me! Oh and let me get this out of the way, and go ahead and say that I am in no way affiliated with Journey Instruments. In fact before this guitar I have never even handled or even seen one of their instruments in person.

Anyways lets move on to the review of this awesome travel guitar!

The first thing I noticed when I pulled the guitar out of the box and backpack is that this is truly a compact and lightweight guitar! Journey uses an ingeniously designed system that allows the neck to easily be completely removed from the body, and then it can be packed up into the custom backpack. The backpack was designed to fit in all the major airlines overhead bin compartments. Attaching the neck back onto the body is an easy and quick process. There are lips on the body and neck that mate up, which allows the neck to be rolled into position. And then as you move the neck into position on the body it is locked/clicked into place. At this point the neck is held into position and then you can use the knob on the back of the body to screw the neck into it’s final position. The neck and body securely become one. The whole system is awesome, it’s so easy to install/uninstall the neck, and the hardware is all heavy duty and high quality stainless steel so I don’t think durability will ever be an issue. Compared to the Voyage-Air system, I definitely prefer Journey’s design.

2018 Gear Rank Top Pick (Tied for first place)

As the label implies, the Journey OF660M Carbon Fiber does away with traditional wood to turn it into a super reliable travel guitar. As special as that may be, the carbon fiber body of this guitar takes a second seat to what really makes this guitar special: which is its removable neck system. While removable necks are nothing new, the Journey OF660M has pulled it off in a way that detaching and attaching the neck is convenient and very easy – without straying too far from the familiar acoustic guitar shape. It even comes with a matching gig-bag so you can safely store the neck and body separately, while keeping the strings in a position where it doesn’t break or scratch the guitar.place)

Customer Feedback: Journey Instruments OF660 by Randall W. from NV.

Received my OF660 just fine and I absolutely love it. I dropped it on the sidewalk once already so it’s no longer cosmetically perfect, but I bought it to USE and carry with me everywhere, so I wasn’t expecting it to stay perfect.  I have been playing way more often because of how great the neck is and how good it sounds.  It plays incredibly well.  I’m honestly surprised at how much it has exceeded my expectations.
